Some 20% of passenger transport in Greater Cairo is conducted by Uber cars, although it has been just a year since the company launched its services in the Egyptian market, according to Uber chief advisor and member of the Board of Directors David Plouffe. The Egyptian market is one of the most important markets in the Middle East owing to its population density, making the need for Uber's services rather impelling, Plouffe said. Regarding jobs in Uber, Plouffe said 28% of the company cars in the US market are driven by women compared to 7% in Egypt. However, this percentage is expected to increase in Egypt in the upcoming period. During a seminar conducted by the American University in Cairo (AUC) Monday, Plouffe said Uber adopts strict controls, whether on cars selected to work for Uber or their drivers, and the services offered by the company in Egypt are completely legal. Uber has a long-term commitment to creating tens of thousands of jobs and entrepreneurship opportunities, he added. Since launching in Cairo, the Uber technology platform has created work opportunities for over 2000 drivers per month. Over 40% of the drivers were previously unemployed prior to joining Uber. The number of female drivers joining the platform has also increased, having grown 10 times over the course of six months.
