PM opens "L05 runway" in Cairo Airport after renovation at cost of EGP 235m
Construction of "Terminal 2" will be completed next April at estimated cost of EGP 3.4bn

Prime Minister Sherif Ismail opened the new runway "L05", the renovation of which was completed this week at a cost of EGP 235m. At 3,300m by 60m, the new runway is now ready for all types of aircraft, especially larger carriers.
Minister of Aviation Hossam Kamal said the runway is intended for day and night operation, since it is equipped with the latest energy-saving lighting system (LED) and navigational devices (CATI) to aid landing operations during difficult weather conditions or when vision is poor. Several aeroplanes have already taken off from the new runway.
Ismail inspected the progress of construction for "Terminal 2", which is expected to be completed in April in preparation for its trial opening. About 95% of the project is already complete; approximately 2,750 employees work over three shifts per day.
Kamal said the connection of the luggage delivery service between Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 is underway as well as developing a luggage delivery service in Terminal 3 to keep pace with improvements installed in the new terminal.
The number of loading bridges in the new terminal will be up to 28 bridges. Transit passengers will no longer have to buy entry visas as the terminal features 11 hotel rooms for this reason.
The minister stressed that renovation of Terminal 2 will increase its capacity by 7.5 million passengers, which will contribute to increasing the total capacity of the airport to more than 30 million passengers a year. The investment value of the project amounts to approximately EGP 3.4bn.
Ismail also inspected the complex of overhaul engines in Cairo International Airport after development. The complex is one of the largest EgyptAir projects for maintenance and provides its services to EgyptAir's aircraft as well as Arab and foreign companies.
The complex was developed in cooperation with Rolls-Royce, the major British manufacturer of aircraft engines in the world. The complex has the latest equipment for maintenance and overhaul engines, in addition to a motor test unit to ensure engine efficiency and operational safety.
EgyptAir Maintenance currently provides maintenance and overhaul engines for more than 100 international companies from Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
