A successful first victory for Egyptian teams in Africa
Smouha, Al-Ahly, and Zamalek are on top of the quarterfinals groups in the two African championships
Published in Daily News Egypt on 02 - 07 - 2015

The first game for an Egyptian team in both the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup was a success, when Smouha won in the group stage over Tunisian Tétouan.
The team was two goals behind, but they managed to win with a score of 3-2 goals. This was a great start for the team, which is playing in the Champions League for the first time in their history. It is also the first continental participation ever for Smouha.
Although Smouha changed their coach a few days before the match, they managed to be on top of the group with Mimi Abdel Razek, the new coach, with a score of three points and a difference of two points from the second and third place. The second and third place went to Sudanese Al-Hilal and Congolese Mazembe, who had a draw in their game in the same group.
As for Al-Ahly, winner of the CAF Confederation Cup, the team started the group stage with a great victory against Espérance de Tunis with three goals to none. Their performance was strong and the team appears to be keen on keeping the cup they won for the first time, both in their history and the history of Egyptian football, in the last season.
Al-Ahly was at the top of the first group, with a difference of only the goals it scored over Tétouan team, which also won the first game in the Mali stadium with a clean goal.
Meanwhile, Zamalek had a tough win against Tunisian Sfaxien, with one goal in the last minutes of the game. The team now has the same three points as the Orlando Pirates, the South African champions who won with the same result against Leopar Du Congo.
Two teams of each group will qualify for next round, so that the semi-final games would be between the first place of each group, against the second of another group.
In the second match, Smouha will play against Al-Hilal on 12 July in the CAF Champions League, while Al-Ahly will play against Mali's team in their field on the same day in the CAF Confederation Cup. On 11 July, Zamalek will play in South Africa against the Orlando Pirates.
