3.7% rise in public sector employees in FY 2013/2014: CAPMAS

The total number of employees in the public sector increased by 3.7% this past fiscal year to reach 5.752 million, compared to 5.545 million in 2012/2013, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).
CAPMAS issued Sunday its report "The annual bulletin of employees in governmental- public/public business sectors in 2013/2014."
The education sector represented the largest number of employees, reaching 1.951 million.
The number of male employees in the public sector increased by 6.6% to reach 4.286 million, while the total number of female employees decreased by 3.8% to become 1.466 million.
Employees working in economic establishments increased by 4.6% to reach 342,000, where the transport and communications sector increased by 47.9% to reach 163,600.
Regarding the public business sector, the total number of employees increased by 0.9% to become 878,900.
Housing and construction represented the largest number of employees in public business sector: 229,800
Male employees in public businesses increased by 1.3% to become 771,900 while female employees decreased by 1.3% to become 108,400.
A day earlier, CAPMAS announced that unemployment rate registered 13.3% during the second quarter (Q2) of 2014, compared to 13.4% during the Q1. The statistics agency added that a minimal increase of 0.01% in the work force was witnessed in Q2, where the work force totalled 27.6 million.
