Published in Daily News Egypt on 12 - 04 - 2014

One protester was shot dead in Alexandria during weekly Friday protests as the Ministry of Interior arrests at least 73 others.
The protester, a 50-year old man, was reportedly shot and killed in the Al-Awayed district of the city during clashes between protesters and security forces, according to state-owned Al-Ahram.
The Ministry of Interior released a statement claiming the arrest of 73 alleged Muslim Brotherhood members in the Cairo, Alexandria, Giza, Daqahleya, Damietta, Fayoum, Minya, Assiut, and Qena governorates. The statement added that some protesters were caught with shotguns, cartridges, Molotov cocktails and fireworks.
Also on Friday, two men were shot dead by police after attempting to light a police checkpoint on fire in Gharbiya. According to state-run MENA news agency, the men also opened fire on police forces guarding a highway.
The men were shot after they tried to escape on a motorcycle.
Early in the day, two bombs exploded in Hossary Square in 6th of October City, the first causing the injury of one police officer, and the second causing no damage. According to Al-Ahram, the first bomb was planted underneath a car that belonged to a Giza traffic policeman.
Clashes between security forces and supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi are common on Fridays, as post-prayer marches are dispersed by security forces.
Attacks against security forces have also become common after Morsi's 3 July ouster. The Muslim Brotherhood was declared a terrorist organisation on 24 December 2013.
