Published in Daily News Egypt on 09 - 05 - 2008

CAIRO: A private storehouse worker in Cairo has admitted to the murder of his friend, motivated by revenge and robbery.
He visited his friend at his workplace at the foot of King Khalid Bridge in Manshiyet Nasser and asked him to accompany him to party together at his expense, and when he refused, the worker is alleged to have given him a blow to the head with an iron rod.
He then dragged him under the bridge, stabbed him several times, slit his throat and stole LE 400 as well as a cell phone and fled the scene, according to police reports.
He was arrested by the police and referred by Major General Ismail Al-Sha'ir, first assistant Interior Minister for Cairo security, to the prosecution, which began investigation.
Lieutenant Colonel Hani Mahfouz received a report that residents had found the body of a person in his thirties. On closer examination it was found that the corpse belongs to a person named Hassan Hashem Abdo, 26, a pastry shop worker from Minya.
The body had sustained a cut in the neck and several stab wounds to the abdomen and the back.
Investigations indicated that Hiras Nagati Ahmed, 26, a Minya-resident and worker at the Cairo governorate storehouse left the body at the foot of the bridge.
The accused was seized in an ambush set up by Tariq El-Gazzar, investigation chief.
After interrogation he admitted he had committed the crime, motivated by revenge and robbery. He said he went to the victim s place of work on Tuesday, May 6, where a verbal argument erupted. When the quarrel developed into a fight the accused gripped an iron rod and hit the victim on his head and then dragged him under the bridge.
He also confessed to having slit the victim's throat with a knife and then stabbed him several times. When he was sure of his death he stole his mobile phone, L.E. 400, a belt and a pair of trousers.
The defendant added that he got rid of the tool used in the crime by burying it in a pit below the bridge along with the belt and the trousers, and then he hid the mobile phone and the money in a public bathroom.
The weapon used in the crime, the cash and the mobile phone were seized and the accused was referred to the prosecution, which ordered him remanded in custody for four days pending investigation.
