CAIRO: Egypt said that the total number of swine flu cases in the country has reached 14,087 since the H1N1 virus first appeared this past June, according to the health ministry's weekly report.
These include 5,200 cases among school students, 803 university students and 8,084 from outside educational institutions.
The global swine flu pandemic claimed the lives of eight more Egyptians, raising the death toll to 195, health ministry spokesman Abdel Rahman Shahin said.
The eight cases includes a 29-year-old man from Giza, a 26-year-old woman from Beheira, a 40-year-old man from Port Said, a 28-year-old woman from Alexandria, a four-month-old baby and a 50-year-old woman from Beni Suef; a 37-year-old woman from Cairo and a 42 year-old man from Qaliubiya.
The number of cases that have recovered from the H1N1 virus is 13,738, or 97.5 percent. There are currently 154 patients receiving treatment in hospitals around the country.
Meanwhile, health quarantines at the country's ports of entry have been told to halt measures to detect swine flu among new arrivals to Egypt, according to a ministry statement, which added that these measures will not limit the widespread virus.
On Jan. 9, health quarantines in different ports checked a total of 346 planes carrying 39,984 passengers; 36 ships carrying 1,577 passengers; and 490 cars carrying 46,115 passengers - none of which exhibited swine flu symptoms, according to Cabinet's Information and Decision Support Center.
