El Sakia commences its second documentary film festival
CAIRO: El Sakia Cultural Center starts its second documentary film festival tomorrow at 8:30 p.m. Awards will be distributed at the closing ceremony of the four-day festival on July 18.
This year, 50 documentary films are participating in the festival, with 26 being short documentary films of less than 20 minutes each, while the rest are long documentary films, 20 minutes or longer. Two awards will be given to the directors of best film and second best film in each of the two categories: winners of the best movie award will receive a prize of LE 3,000 and the festival's golden statue, while winners of the judging committee award win LE 1,500 and the festival's silver statue.
Members of this year's judging committee are Mohamed Kamel El Qaliouby, head of the committee, Ramsis Marzouk, Salah Marei and Karim Gamal El Din. According to El Qaliouby, El Sawy's festival is set apart from the so-called "eagle stamp festivals - this year's festival is characterized by the utmost in freedom of expression, based on the idea that just as a writer needs only paper and pen to write a story, a director needs only a camera and a great mind to create freely. El Qaliouby described the festival as youthful, democratic, free and full of liveliness.
The majority of the participating movies are of Egyptian production, with only three foreign produced movies. Brazilian director, Gandeera Betchico directed "Malak El Gabal ("Angel of the Mountain ); Iraqi directors Faiq Ahmed and Ady Salah directed "Ragu'l wa Qubab ("A Man and Domes ) and "El Mahragan Wathiqah ("The Festival's Document ).
