Students unite for Lebanon at film screening
Published in Daily News Egypt on 08 - 10 - 2006

CAIRO: Students poured into the screening of Lebanese film "West Beirut at the American University (AUC) in Cairo on Wednesday night. Organized by the student body "33 Days for Lebanon. The screening served as a part of the university's month long Unity Campaign to aid Lebanon and show solidarity with the Lebanese people.
Directed by Ziad Doueiri, West Beirut depicts the life of the three teenagers Tarek, Omar, and May during the outbreak of the Lebanese civil war in the spring of 1975. All schools are closed and the city has been split into the Christian-controlled East Beirut and the Muslim militia-controlled West Beirut. Forced to enter adulthood earlier than expected as violence seizes the city, the teenagers world becomes smaller and more repressed as parts of their familiar surroundings are suddenly declared off-limits.
Following the screening, viewers were encouraged to write a message in solidarity to the students at the American University in Beirut in a book which will be given to the students after Ramadan.
On Sept. 20, students at AUC launched a month long Unity Campaign to aid Lebanon and show solidarity with the Lebanese people.
Campaign representatives have called upon fellow student organizations as well as non-governmental organizations to participate in the relief effort. Donations will include money, food, medical supplies and refugee tents.
Students are aiming to raise at least LE 1 million for Lebanon, which will be delivered directly by AUC's Campaign representatives after Ramadan.
