A plaster wall ornamented only with a battered sign stating "Thai Restaurant belies the beauty of the wood paneled balcony at the top of the staircase. It is so charming, you might be tempted to stop there, but the inside of the restaurant is worth a look too. Large, low tables in the corners, surrounded by long plush couches beckon big groups to while away a pleasant evening. The ornate decorations create a lovely setting, although a few rather adventurous checkered dining cloths and the live pianist playing American jazz standards make an amusing clash with the otherwise elegant oriental décor. But the best part of Sabai Sabai is not specifically the decorations, or the food (which is quite good); it is the effort made to create a true dining experience. From the second you set foot on the balcony to the moment they see you out the door, employees are attentive and thoughtful; a rare trait in the majority of restaurants here. Though occasionally rough around the edges in terms of style, the service is always enthusiastic and efficient, with some touches of sophistication, such as the delicious tiny spring rolls brought out to whet diners' appetite before ordering. Although many of the dishes are unfamiliar to this rather experienced Thai diner, the food is delicious. The spring rolls fall more into the Chinese style than Thai, but they are still good. Try not to be overzealous with the tasty Thai hot sour soups as some of the grass herbs in there are a little tough. The prices are reasonable; most entrees range from LE 35-LE 45, though some of the more unique dishes will cost you more. If you want to eat a little more on the cheap, try some of their delicious noodle dishes in the LE 20 range The only real downside is the wine selection - it still needs some work The best way to enjoy the cuisine is to order a few dishes and share. Try the Thai Red Curry with Roasted Duck (LE 45), or the Noodles with Chicken in Special Sauce (no idea what that is, but it's delicious). It's ok for even timid eaters to be bolder with spicy food here, most are actually rather tame, though very tasty. If you're a fan of hotter foods it's worth putting in a word with the waiter ahead of time, otherwise you might be disappointed. Bring your date to this place; the chance you'll flare up that best-kept- restrained temper with a sullen waiter is nil. In a city where lack luster service is the norm, Sabai Sabai is a gem that will find a repeat visit from this viewer, and sometime soon.
