CAIRO: Following the sentencing to death of 21 defendants for their role in the February 2012 violence at a Port Said stadium that left at least 74 people dead, massive violence broke out at the prison holding those accused. At least 14 people have been killed in the ongoing violence in the eastern Egyptian city. The violence, including live ammunition against police guarding the prison, comes after the court ruling. Families of many of those killed football fans, or al-Ahly Ultras, cheered and screamed in joy when the verdict mentioned the Mufti, who must approve the death sentence as per Egypt's penal code. Yet, none of the officers accused were mentioned in the ruling, with their verdict to be heard on March 9. Many believe that the sentence is a political ploy to calm down the country, especially as the Ahly Ultras gathered in the thousands outside of the club's headquarters in the Gazeera area of Cairo awaiting the court's ruling.
