BANGKOK: A Chinese model has sparked controversy in China after posing in photos wearing a police uniform. 23-year-old Wang Xiaomeng was given a suspended 9-month jail term for “impersonating the police” in the photos that she posted on her Weibo account. The ruling has angered many women in the country over what they have called “ridiculous.” People who saw the photos allegedly were inflamed by what they say, forcing the courts to take action. The court, in its ruling, said that the young model had “insulted the integrity of policemen and women.” The photos were reportedly part of a publicity assignment but had used them on her personal page with a fake story on how she was a policewoman known for her beauty. She pleaded guilty to the charges. Visitors to her blog have blasted her for her actions, and many of the other photos she has posted in the past are being spread fervently on the Internet. Others, however, said the attacks on the young model were unfounded and that models across the world regularly dress up as police officers in order to “gain extra sex appeal.” The court thought differently.
