Guards block roads leading to Egypt presidential palace

CAIRO: Egypt's Republican Guards blocked all the roads leading to the Heliopolis presidential palace with barbed wire on Thursday, after the army deployed tanks on the exits to stop protesters from approaching.
Forces have evacuated the area from supporters of President Mohamed Morsi but opponents of Morsi have gathered behind the barbed wire chanting against the decree and draft constitution.
Political turmoil erupted when President Mohamed Morsi issued a constitutional decree on November 22 shielding his decisions from judicial challenges and escalated as he called for a December 15 referendum on a draft constitution written by an Islamist-dominated assembly.
Confrontations between supporters and opponents of Mursi on Wednesday left five people dead and at least 650 injured.
