CAIRO: An American photographer with The Associated Press was reportedly arrested by Egyptian police on Monday morning near Qasr el-Aini street. He was released about an hour later. According to activists online, Thomas Hartwell, a long-time photographer based in Egypt, and originally from Texas, reported to be arrested and had been taken for interrogation at an unknown location. It is unclear why the police detained Hartwell, but in the past, police and security forces have detained journalists without cause, including Bikyamasr.com's Editor Joseph Mayton last December. “Hartwell called again said police are taking him for interrogation. Not clear where but nearby he said,” Ranwa Yehia wroter on her Twitter account in telling the world of the initial detention. Journalists in Egypt face crackdowns from security forces for doing their job during all clashes in the country.
