SINGAPORE: Low-budget airlines Firefly is continuing to look at ways to expand its services in Southeast Asia. Now, the company is looking to have direct routes from Singapore to Sabah and Sarawak in Malaysia as a way of expanding its offerings to customers. The announcement, although not confirmed, was being welcome by travel operators here in Singapore, who told Bikyamasr.com that “it would really be a solid route as many people want to take weekends and holidays there.” Firefly CEO Ignatius Ong said the community airline was constantly studying and reviewing its network to ensure optimal utilisation of its assets. In certain cases, existing routes may project increasing demand and vice versa, he said. “Subsequently, time and market demand may also encourage us to consider reinstating former routes. In such instances, we will dynamically review the routes where appropriate adjustments are made when necessary. “We must also look into our current fleet to ensure we have the right planes with the right range to service some of our potential destinations,” he told Bernama news agency on Monday. Ong said Firefly would continuously seek new and exciting destinations to ply to and most importantly those seen profitable. “We prefer to grow organically, in line with the vision of our parent company, Malaysia Airlines (MAS),” he said. Firefly currently provides connectivity from Singapore to Subang, Ipoh, Kuantan and Kota Baru.
