DUBAI: Qatar continues to push against nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East, its Foreign Ministry Legal Affairs Department Ambassador Ahmed al-Hammadi said. It comes as Iran's controversial nuclear program aims to develop nuclear weapons, accusations that Tehran has denied. As a result, Israel – the Middle East's only nuclear power – has threatened to use military action in order to prevent any move towards a weapon. In a statement published by Qatar News Agency (QNA), al-Hammadi, who represented Qatar in the preparatory meeting at the Helsinki Conference on a nuclear weapons-free Middle East, said Qatar is also “keen on continuing coordination and preparation for the conference, which is an implementation of the 2010 Review Conference of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).” Al-Hammadi stressed the importance of crystallizing a unified Arab stance to continue international pressure on Israel to join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. “During today's meeting participants agreed on the need for international pressure to ensure Israel's participation in this important conference and commitment to its outcomes to rid the region of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction,” he said.
