ADDIS ABABA: Rwanda has seen its number of mobile phone subscribers cross the five million mark, the Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Agency (RURA) said in its latest publishing of statistics on telecom trends in the country through August. MTN Rwanda remained market leader, with 3.188 million subscribers, followed by Tigo Rwanda with 1.732 million. Airtel Rwanda has 168,832 subscribers, the report said. According to the industry regulator, mobile penetration has increased to 47.5 percent in the country. RURA also said that it believes the increase in mobile subscribers is the direct result of better customer care, more options and better connectivity. It praised the country's operators as being on par with the needs of their customers. Rwanda has been moving slowly but confidently toward boosting the overall speed of their networks in the country, which RURA said was having a direct impact on giving all citizens accessibility to mobile phones and the telecom sector. The regulator has called on MTN and Tigo to improve their networks after a number of recent reports have suggested outages are becoming more frequent.
