NAIROBI: The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) is enraged by today's killing of fifteenth Somali journalist in Mogadishu so far this year. Ahmed Abdullahi Farah, reporter and cameraman for Yemen News Agency (SABA), was killed in a minibus in Dharkenley district in southern Mogadishu. Armedmen killed Farah at a checkpoint after the journalist reportedly tried pull his camera to take some pictures and armed men did not want pictures to be taken. “This serial killing of journalists had never happened in our country and it is clearly premeditated campaign to eliminate Somalia's journalists' community. It is a media nightmare that requires urgent attention," said Omar Faruk Osman, NUSOJ Secretary General. Farah, 32, is the fifteenth journalist killed in Somalia since January this year and the sixth journalist murdered in Mogadishu in September alone, making this month the deadliest month for Somali journalists in the history. NUSOJ issued today an urgent appeal to the Somali authorities and the African Union to take urgent action over the “media nightmare" in Somalia and to focus on the humanitarian crisis that has overtaken the Somali journalists.
