Women disgusted by Bikini Basketball League in US
Published in Bikya Masr on 30 - 09 - 2012

LOS ANGELES: Lingerie football was already too much. But now, women are again voicing their anger over the announcement of a 7-team Bikini Basketball league in the United States, with numerous women saying it is “disgusting.”
On Thursday, it was reported that the inaugural season of bikini-clad female basketball players will begin in 2013.
“This is just more disgusting attempts to get women to wear next to nothing for money. Maybe they should just be naked. It would sell,” said Aubrey Montague, a UCLA student who played high school basketball.
She told Bikyamasr.com that “this sort of league will be yet another shameful thing that this country has done. What's next, g-string soccer? I am so ashamed right now.”
Others on Facebook and Twitter took aim at the new league announcement saying it is selling sex and does little to promote actual sports.
“We are real athletes so treat us like such. Where are the speedo basketball leagues for men,” one user said on Twitter.
But it will take place.
The 7 teams of the Bikini Basketball League teams are the Chicago Desire, the Orlando Lady Cats, the Miami Spice, the Los Angeles Ice, the Hollywood Hotties and the Atlanta Fleet Angels. Tryouts have already taken place.
A Miami Spice spokesperson said,
“This is a competitive basketball league, so we are definitely looking for girls that can really play. It is also a bikini league in which the girls will be playing basketball in bikinis, so looking good in a bikini is a must.”
And that is what has many women angered. They argue this is too much about a woman's body and showing it off, rather than about basketball.
“It is plain and simply disgusting. I am sad that women actually tried out, but I guess money is a lot and with the current situation here, it just sucks,” added Montague.
