NEW DELHI: A young 14-year-old India girl died after she had set herself on fire after being sexually harassed on a regular basis by a group of youth in Uttar Pradesh, police sources confirmed to Bikyamasr.com on Monday evening following local media reports. “The girl has died after immolating,” a police statement said, but they added they could not take action against the group of young boys until the family files an official police report. “We are on the lookout and are watching the area for those responsible, but the family must take action before we can make arrests,” the police source told Bikyamasr.com. According to a Times of India report, the teenage girl had been followed by a group of boys, led by someone they reported as Rohit. “On Saturday, Rohit again intercepted her and proposed marriage to her. The girl returned home where she locked herself in a room and set herself on fire,” the report said. The girl passed away from the injuries at a local hospital on Monday. Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Kanpur Amitabh Yash, while confirming the incident, told IANS that the girl was a resident of Hanumant Nagar and was “being hounded by some local boys.” The family of the girl had named neighbor “Rohit and his friends” for harassing her and pushing her into taking such an extreme step. Earlier, police had last month arrested Rohit following complaints by the girl's family but he was out of released soon as the charges slapped on him were minor. After this, he had started threatening the girl. Police were allegedly informed of the continued harassment, but ToI reported they did not intervene.
