KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's military on Tuesday said that militant threats remain in the country, but that through their efforts of monitoring they are ensuring safety for all Malaysians. Armed Forces (ATM) Chief General Zulkifeli Zain said the situation “showed that the threat of militancy in the country still existed, 12 years after the Al-Maunah militant incident.” He said, ATM, in cooperation with the police, always took the initiative to curb the spread of militancy in the country since the incident in Bukit Jenalik, Sauk which killed two members of the security force, 12 years ago. “Although, militant elements still existed, the situation is controlled and monitored by the security forces,” he told Bernama. Zulkifli said 13 individuals linked with elements of Darul Islam, and believed to have networking with the Indonesian Jemaah Islamiah and militant groups in the Philippines, were detained in Tawau, Sabah, through close cooperation of the ATM and police, in November.
