SINGAPORE: Animal rights activists in Singapore are angered and outraged over the government's announced plans to cull the wild boar population. “It is disgusting and wrong that a wild animal will be killed simply because authorities believe their numbers are too high,” Singaporean animal rights activist Tori Lee told Bikyamasr.com. She argued that “this sort of action denies the animals the basic right to live. It is cruel.” Singapore's National Parks Department announced this month that they would move forward on plans to curtail the rising number of wild boar in the island country, which has restaurant owners clamoring to try and get a piece of the meat for their customers. But the move, coupled with the calls from both Singapore and Malaysia to deliver the slaughtered animals to restaurants has hit Lee hard. “Not only are they going to kill a large number of animals, now we see people trying to get the murdered animals onto dinner plates,” she continued. “I find it disgusting and simply wrong on so many levels,” she added. Other animal rights advocates say they are hoping a protest will be organized, or some form of action, to push the government to end the cull.
