Malaysia to host SEA Games 2017
Published in Bikya Masr on 18 - 07 - 2012

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia said that it would be the host for the 29th SEA Games in 2017. The country last hosted the SEA Games in 2001.
The SEA Games Federation (SGF) meeting in Myanmar last weekend confirmed that Malaysia would host the regional biennial event in 2017 “should there be no other country willing to bid for the host job," said a report by the Bernama news agency.
Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) Secretary General Sieh Kok Chi, who attended the meeting, said that Myanmar would host the Games next year, followed by Singapore in 2015.
“Then it should be Brunei's turn but it wants to host the 2019 Games instead of the 2017 edition. So, Malaysia is willing to be the host for the 2017 Games," he said on Tuesday.
Kuala Lumpur last hosted the SEA Games in 2001, when Malaysia became the overall champions of the tournament, earning 111 gold medals.
Since the inaugural SEA Games, which was held in Bangkok in 1959, Malaysia has hosted the 1977, 1989 and 2001 Games.
Cambodia is the only Asean country yet to host the Games though it wants the host job in 2021.
