KUALA LUMPUR: With Malaysians preparing for the holy month of Ramadan, where Muslims in the country will fast from sunrise to sunset, the government hinted at preparation for a snap election. Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassan said in comments published by local media that there was “nothing wrong” with holding the general election during the holy month. “We are now going into the fasting month. Some people have asked whether the general election would be held during the fasting month,” said Yassin. “And what's wrong with during the Raya month? After that, there's the Merdeka day and Malaysia Day celebrations,” he added. But many say the move would not be smart, arguing that Malaysians focus on giving and family during the month of fasting and an election would erode the holiness of the month. “I don't want elections during this period because it doesn't seem like it would be Islamic,” said advertising executive Mahid Radwan, who told Bikyamasr.com that he would “support the opposition if the government went ahead with an election during Ramadan.” Malaysia must hold a general election before next April.
