CAIRO: In an unsurprising statement, the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) candidate Mohamed Morsy said he would ensure the new constitution for Egypt would be based on Islamic law and the Qur'an. Ironically, Egypt's former constitution and legal frameworks were also based on Islamic law, but analysts tell Bikyamasr.com that the FJP's version of Islamic law is “even more conservative than many think and if allowed to really create the constitution, it would be difficult to recover initially.” “The Koran is our constitution, the Prophet is our leader, jihad is our path and death in the name of Allah is our goal,” Morsy said in his election speech at Cairo University on Saturday night. He said the “triumph” of Islam in the country is growing near. “Today we can establish Sharia law because our nation will acquire well-being only with Islam and Sharia. The Muslim Brothers and the Freedom and Justice Party will be the conductors of these goals,” he said. The Muslim Brotherhood had been banned in Egypt before being allowed into the formal political sphere following the ousting of President Hosni Mubarak in the January uprising and has since emerged as top political force, winning nearly half of Parliament seats in the November/December election. The first round of Egypt's presidential election is scheduled for May 23-24. The presidential campaign starts on April 30 and finishes at midnight on May 21. The president will be elected to a four-year term.
