NAIROBI: Kenya is ranked second in African countries to using social media networking tools such as Twitter and Facebook. Mwai Kibaki, The President of the Republic of Kenya was indeed pleased with this information although he urged users to exercise their freedom responsible and to use these tools to promote development, peace and cohesion. The president added that, “This rapid growth of technology use is promising to transform societies in ways perhaps unthinkable only a few years ago. It has enabled the emergence of new ways to communicate, to share information and knowledge, and for people to widen their sense of participation, identity and belonging.” He further explained that technology has enabled citizens to transform both socially and politically through the different forms of media that exist. “Convergence of press freedom and freedom of expression, through various traditional as well as new media, has given rise to an extraordinary level of media freedom. It has enabled citizens to bring about massive social and political transformations.” He noted that Information and Telecommunications technology has greatly enabled the availability of information to reach large masses of people in a very short time, thus technology has improved the availability of information to Kenyan citizens.
