NAIROBI: Safaricom Kenya has announced the discontinuing of the unlimited data bundle that it had been offering its Internet users from today midnight. The decision was made after the company (Safaricom) realized that some of its users- those that had subscribed to the “Unlimited bundles” were overusing the service thus making other users relying on the service to experience limited services that were degraded and of slower speeds. “As a business, we have found it necessary to focus our energies on providing quality data access to the majority of our internet users. This means that we have to sacrifice the provision of our unlimited bandwidth to a minority whose usage has had a negative impact on the overall data experience,” said Bobby Collymore, CEO at Safaricom Kenya. He added that, “It has always been our position that unlimited internet offerings are better suited for a fixed broadband service such as fiber or Wimax. Since mobile broadband on 3G is designed as a shared resource, the greater the number of internet users at any point in time, the higher the levels of degradation in the quality of service.” This move will cause all its subscribers to internet to face limited browsing for example daily limited bundles or packaged data bundles.
