CAIRO: Egypt's People's Assembly (PA) Constitutional and Legislative Affairs Committee approved on Tuesday, in principle a draft law, submitted by MP Essam Sultan for al-Wasat Party, amending the presidential elections law. The amendment bans members of the former regime from running for the presidency in the coming elections. According to the draft law, all senior officials who served in the former regime over the past five years should be banned from holding senior posts, including the president, vice president and prime minister posts for the coming ten years. The PA decided to hold an extraordinary session on Wednesday, to continue debates on the bill. An official judicial source said laws cannot be applied retroactively. In another development, the State Council Administrative Court decided on Tuesday to postpone looking into the case of presidential hopeful Hazem Abu-Ismail over the dual nationality of his mother to Wednesday.
