CAIRO: Egypt's ministry of state for antiquities managed to restore 80 relics smuggled out of Egypt and taken to Belgium, after a court ruling in Brussels ordered the return of the relics to Egypt. Belgian authorities had seized the 80 artifacts at the Brussels Airport in April 2010, the state-run MENA news agency reported on Sunday. The relics date back several Egyptian ages, including prehistoric, Pharaonic, and Greco-Roman, Coptic and Islamic. Mohamed Ibrahim, the Minister of Antiquities, said the seized relics were found at the Brussels Airport after an Egyptian woman attempted to smuggle them inside two fake wooden statues. He added that she was arrested by the airport's customs officials and that a court ruling proved Egypt's right to restore them. He explained that the officials of the National Museum of Brussels were asked to examine the relics and they were proven to be genuine and then Interpol in Egypt was identified. He added that “upon informing the Ministry of Antiquities, legal procedures were taken and negotiations commenced with the Belgian Embassy in Cairo to ensure that the relics were Egyptian.”
