Milan, Italy (dpa) – A reservoir of more than 283 billion cubic meters of gas has been discovered off the coast of Mozambique, Italian fuel company Eni said Monday. The “new giant natural gas discovery” was made at the Mamba North East 1 exploration site, some 50 kilometers off Cape Delgado at an underwater depth ranging between 1,848 to 4,650 meters, Eni said in a statement. The find improves the potential of the so-called Area 4 of the Mamba complex to a total estimated of at least 1.1 trillion cubic meters of gas, Eni said. “During 2012, Eni plans to drill at least another four wells in nearby structures to fully assess the upside potential of the Mamba Complex,” the Italian state-controlled company said. Eni is the operator of Area 4, with a 70 percent participating interest. Other co-owners are Portugal's Galp Energia, South Korea's KOGAS and Mozambique's ENH – each of which have a 10 percent stake.
