Manila (dpa) – Kidnappers freed two public-school teachers abducted in the southern Philippines last week, an army spokesman said Monday. No ransom was paid for the release Sunday night of Rene Sumagang and Serfino Sanchez, who were kidnapped March 19 in the southern city of Iligan, Captain Albert Caber said. “The kidnappers decided to release their captives after sensing a big number of operating troops from the army and the police,” he said. The kidnappers, believed to be members of a kidnapping-for-ransom syndicate in the area, had demanded 4 million pesos (94,000 dollars) for the release of the teachers.
