SANA'A: Officials from the province of Shabwa, situated east of the capital, Sana'a denied reports that al-Qaeda militants would have overrun the town of Sundrum yesterday, seizing great many territories in the province, putting them in essence in control of Shabwa. If indeed Shabwa was to fall to the hands of terrorists, Yemen would be then facing a situation where its armed forces would have to force back al-Qaeda from not 2, not 3 but 4 provinces: Abyan, Mareb, Shabwa and Hadramaut. Given the dissensions currently shaking up the military and more threats of defections as soldiers and officers alike are turning towards President Abdu Rabbo Mansour Hadi to appoint new commanders and put an end to corruption, the task seems rather daunting. Interestingly as local residents around Sundrum reported to the press that Ansar al-Sharia Islamist militants had entered the town, quickly asserting their control over the entire area, noting that the army offered a poor resistance, Shabwa's governor is denying such allegations, maintaining that his town was as peaceful as ever.
