DUBAI: Women's advocates in the UAE are outraged at the weak sentence handed down to two men who coerced and raped a Philippines waitress last year. The ruling was handed a three-year sentence and deportation on its completion to the two Pakistani men. According to court officials, the two men, 29-years-old and 35-years-old, coerced the young woman to a residential flat by telling her they were advertising agents looking for models. Police said they had found evidence that other women were also raped by the two men using the same scheme. “It is a travesty to justice,” said university student Mona Qassemi, who told Bikyamasr.com that “if police found evidence and proof that more women were also raped, then why was the sentence only three years? It shows you that women have no rights in this country and can be beaten and raped or killed and the criminals get such sentence.” The young woman, who was not identified, said one of the guards approached her as she was walking down a street in Al Muttaina area at around noon. At the time, he was holding a catalog of photos and claimed that he worked in the advertising and fashion business. He offered to take her photographs and get them published in magazines. At first, the Filipina refused but the man showed her names of other women, mostly Filipinas, who supposedly signed a contract with him. He insisted that she should have a look at his “office,” which turned out to be a residential flat. Once inside, he stopped her from leaving by locking the door. He then pushed her to a sofa and forced her to have sex with him, threatening to hurt her with a pair of scissors. The guard later called his colleague, who was hiding in the bathroom. The colleague also had sex with her against her will, the woman reported. “I am fed up with all this,” added Qassemi.
