MUMBAI: Maoists have called for a ban on tourism to the tribal areas of India's Odisha, arguing that the foreign visitors is “denigrating” the their heritage and culture. It comes after the group abducted two Italians recently after they had taken reportedly photographed locals. The Maoists took the two Italians in the tribal area of Kandhamal-Ganjam region. Since then, a pamphlet has been distributed that details 13 demands, which local Indian officials say they are currently examining. The charter also says that the Italians and their aides treated “tribal people like animals.” The militant group said they are keeping the tourists safe in order to stop “human safari” in the country. The abductions have left many foreigners and foreign embassies on edge, hoping that the tension will not continue. Government officials in Mumbai told Bikyamasr.com that the situation in Odisha is not like most of India and foreigners should not worry about enjoying “Incredible India” in reference to the tourism ministry's slogan for the country.
