Cairo (dpa) – Egypt's parliament agreed on Saturday that 50 per cent of the 100-person assembly charged with drafting a new constitution will be lawmakers, which means that Islamists who have a majority in parliament will have a key role in the process. The remaining 50 will be legal experts, academics, intellectuals, unions members and religious scholars. The upper and lower houses of parliament will meet on March 24 in a joint session to vote for the members of the constituent assembly. Members of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party and the radical Salafists dominate more than two-thirds of Egypt's two houses of parliament. The new constitution will decide the coming president's powers, as well as the political role of the military, which has been in power since the fall of president Hosni Mubarak in February last year.
