London (dpa) – More than three-quarters of Britons believe that the war in Afghanistan is unwinnable and 55 per cent want British troops to be withdrawn immediately, a poll showed Tuesday. Publication of the survey by polling institute ComRes came as Prime Minister David Cameron was set to fly to Washington for crucial talks on Afghanistan with US President Barack Obama. The figures showed that 73 percent of Britons believe the conflict cannot be won, an increase from 60 percent a year ago. More than half of Britons want troops to be withdrawn immediately. Meanwhile, the two leaders are expected to discuss troop withdrawal plans in the light of a number of recent setbacks in Afghanistan. In a joint article in the Washington Post Monday, Obama and Cameron said they were “proud of the progress” made in dismantling al-Qaeda and breaking the Taliban's momentum, as well as training Afghan forces. “As recent days remind us, this remains a difficult mission,” they added.
