Amman (dpa)- Islamists demonstrated in Amman on Friday, urging the government to cut diplomatic ties with Damascus and throw their support behind Syrian revolutionaries. In a rally organized by the Muslim Brotherhood – the largest political force in Jordan – some 2,000 activists denounced Jordan's “weak” position towards Syria. “We need a clear and strong position from the government in support of the Syrian people and not the Syrian regime,” Hamzeh Mansour, secretary general of the Islamic Action Front, the Muslim Brotherhood's political arm, told dpa. He stopped short of calling on Amman to arm the rebels, urging the government instead to utilize Jordan's “strategic location” to support efforts to end the conflict. “We are the closest to Syria in terms of people and geography, and we should use our location to support all efforts to help them secure their basic rights to freedom,” Mansour said. During the two-hour rally, activists called on the government to follow the lead of Tunisia and Libya by expelling the Syrian ambassador and extending support to the Free Syrian Army. Although Jordan has taken in 80,000 Syrians since the start of the conflict, it has been reluctant to place pressure on its northern neighbor, due to close economic ties and security concerns.
