SULAYMANIYAH, Iraq (dpa) – Syria has not been invited to take part in an upcoming Arab League summit to be held in Baghdad later this month, an Iraqi official said on Friday. The Iraqi government had initially resisted Arab League pressure against participation by the government of President Bashar al-Assad. However, in recent statements, the Iraqi government has condemned the regime's crackdown on opponents in the violence-stricken Syria. Tayfour said that presidents and kings of Arab states will attend the summit, which he described as “an achievement for the new Iraq.” After US troops completed their withdrawal from the country in December, Iraq has seen a rise in violence, triggering doubts about the government's efforts to boost security ahead of the summit. The summit, scheduled for March 29, will be Iraq's first pan-Arab conference in more than two decades.
