Director of Yemeni Petroleum Company quits under pressure
Published in Bikya Masr on 08 - 03 - 2012

SANA'A: Omar al-Arhabi, the Director of the Yemeni Petroleum Company decided to resign from his position after workers held a strike.
Yemen Petroleum Company, one of the leading companies under supervision of the Yemen General Organization for Petroleum and Gas which falls under the Ministry of Oil and Minerals, specializes in marketing petroleum products in the local market.
Ever the since the signing of the power-transfer agreement signed by former President Ali Abdullah Saleh in November 21st 2011, government workers set out to conduct a series of demonstrations against specific figures in the government, demanding their immediate departure. For reasons ranging from corruption, abuse of power or political manipulation, dozens of officials fell victims of the “Institutions Revolution” realizing that they were no going against people's anger.
Workers at YPC also accused the director of having embezzled large amounts of money, calling for the authorities to open up an enquiry of what many are already calling “the looting of Yemen's assets.”
Interestingly, political allies to al-Arhabi argued that all the allegations brought forward had been made without proof, stressing that the move was merely another attempt by “certain unsavory political faction” to discredit “honest and honorable men whose loyalty to the state had been proven many times over.”
“Such attacks are despicable and very telling of the sorts of policies enemies of the Republic are carrying out. Those men should be held in contempt if you ask me”, said a former state official who for personal reasons preferred to remain anonymous.
Al-Arhabi attributed his resignation to health reasons.
Mr. al-Arhabi whose resignation letter was accepted by Oil and Minerals Minister Hisham Sharaf, said in a statement that through the course of his career he had endeavored to serve his country to the best of his abilities.
According to sources close to the coalition government al-Arhabi would have already left the country.
