Cairo (dpa) – Syrian government troops Sunday pounded the dissident town of Rastan in the central province of Homs, opposition activists reported. The troops used planes and fired artillery shells in their attack on the positions of rebel fighters in the town, added the activists. The report could not be independently verified. Homs has been a rallying point for rebels against the rule of President Bashar al-Assad since a popular uprising started in March 2011. Meanwhile, the Red Cross was Sunday waiting for a go-ahead from the Syrian government to enter the devastated Baba Amr district of the city of Homs to deliver humanitarian and medical supplies. An aid convoy of seven trucks has been prevented since Friday from going into Baba Amr, which the opposition says has been shattered by almost a month of government shelling attacks. Syrian authorities have cited security reasons for barring the Red Cross convoy from the district. BM ShortURL: http://goo.gl/gXkoo Tags: Activists, Bombing, Homs, Violence Section: Latest News, Syria
