ALGIERS (dpa): A suicide bomber attacked a paramilitary police building in Algeria's Tamanrasset region, and left more than 20 people injured, local media reported Saturday. El Watan newspaper reported that 23 people, mostly from the gendarmes, were injured when a man drove a vehicle through the gates of the building in Tahaggart, nearly 2,000 kilometers south of Algiers, and blew it up. The powerful explosion caused extensive damage to the building and also blew out the windows of neighboring buildings, El Watan reported. Arabic-language daily En Nahar reported the bomber died in the blast. The injured were taken to a hospital in the town of Tamanrasset, where one member of the gendarmes was in critical condition. The incident is the latest in a string of terrorist attacks against security targets in Algeria. Until now, however, the attacks had been concentrated in the north of the country. The region where Saturday's attack took place, in the Sahel sub-desert near the border with Niger and Mali, has witnessed an influx of refugees recently from fighting between Tuareg rebels and government forces in northern Mali.
