SANA'A: Yemeni security sources have told Bikyamasr.com that a large explosion has hit an army base southeast of the country's capital, Sana'a, on Saturday. The blast was reportedly caused by a car bomb at the camp belonging to the elite Republican Guard in al-Baida province, about 170 kilometers from the capital. Yemen's Mareb Press confirmed that the explosion destroyed buildings inside the camp and heavily damaged nearby houses, according to the site. There were no immediate reports about casualties. The blast was believed to be the work of al-Qaeda, said Mareb Press. Al Baida borders the province of Abyan, regarded as an al-Qaeda stronghold in Yemen. At least 25 people were killed last week when a suicide bomber, reportedly an affiliate of al-Qaeda, attacked a presidential complex in southern Yemen. The attack was carried out just hours after Yemen's newly-elected President Abd Rabu Mansour Hadi had been sworn in. Hadi, who put an end to the 33-year rule of Ali Abdullah Saleh, has vowed to fight al-Qaeda, calling it a “religious and national duty.” ** with dpa BM ShortURL: http://goo.gl/swkVv Tags: Army, Base, Bomb, Explosion Section: Latest News, Yemen
