CAIRO: Egyptian authorities have released Ibrahim Makkawi, whom they had arrested in the Cairo airport on suspicion that he was really Saif al-Adel. Al-Adel is on the FBI's most wanted list for organizing the terrorist bombings of US embassies in Africa, in the late 90s. Al-Adel is also thought to be an active senior member of al-Qaeda leadership. Makkawi claims to have been suffering a decades-long case of mistaken identity, and voluntarily came to Cairo in a move to finally clear up the matter. He was issued a temporary Egyptian passport at the embassy in Islamabad, in order to enter the country. Authorities were waiting for him in the Cairo airport. Makkawi had been living in Pakistan, after a falling-out with al-Qaeda leaders in the late 80s. He had gone to join bin Laden's jihad against the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, and quickly became disillusioned. Makkawi was unavailable for comment at press time.
