ST PETERSBURG (dpa): Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Friday that he would nominate current President Dmitry Medvedev to be his premier if he wins the presidential poll at the weekend. Putin – who made the promise at a meeting with international media editors – has campaigned on pledges of stability, continuity and making Russia a great power again. He is the clear favorite to win the polls, scheduled for Sunday. The announcement, made on the last day of campaigning, quickly became the top election campaign news story on Russian official television broadcasts. No campaigning is allowed on the day before elections in Russia. Medvedev gave a televised statement calling on Russians to turn out and vote on Sunday, without saying who they should vote for. “I am sure Russians will make the right choice,” said Medvedev, a Putin protégé hand-picked to become president in 2008, when Putin stepped down after two terms in office.
