CAIRO: The Chinese Embassy in Egypt confirmed on Thursday that two Chinese workers were kidnapped and are being held for ransom in Egypt by unidentified gunmen. The two men worked at a marble factory in Cairo. The deputy head of the Chinese People Association in Egypt, Xien Jiannan, told China's Xinhua news agency that the kidnappers demanded a 500,000 Egyptian pounds ransom, $83,000, in exchange of their safe release. The two Chinese nationals were kidnapped on their way to work on Thursday morning from outside their home in Maadi, a suburb south of Cairo. Less than one month ago, 25 workers at a military-owned cement factory in the Sinai Peninsula were kidnapped and held for one day before they were released unharmed. A group of Bedouins kidnapped the men in exchange for releasing relatives of theirs imprisoned by the Egypt government. The ministry of interior is believed by many to take a deliberately poor approach to security, one year after a popular uprising that started on January 25, or National Police Day, overthrew the old regime.
