CAIRO: An event named “Kids Read” will take place on Thursday at Cairo's Al-Azhar park. Through storytelling, games and workshops, the event hopes to foster enthusiasm for reading among children in Cairo. “This event is a fantastic way to show kids that reading is fun and to get them excited about books. Reading is a key part of a child's development process – it is an essential skill which will benefit kids for the rest of their lives,” said Karen Daly-Gherabi, Deputy Director of the British Council in Egypt. The event is sponsored by HSBC Bank Middle East Limited and Affiliates. The British Council has trained volunteers from HSBC to read stories to the children. The books include The Great Pet Sale, Jamela's Birthday and Master Money the Millionaire. There will be activities following the storytelling and children will be able to participate in games, crafts and fun competitions. Over the course of one academic year, “Kids Read” aims to work with 25,000 children in 13 different countries in the MENA region in a collaboration between the British Council, HSBC and Ministries of Education. ** Parents can register themselves and their children of primary school-age for the free event by telephoning (02)33001608. Alongside activities for children, there will be workshops for parents, all of which will be in Arabic.
