CAIRO (dpa): Egyptian authorities on Wednesday arrested Sayf al-Adl, a top al-Qaeda military leader, upon his arrival in the country from Pakistan, sources at Cairo airport said. Al-Adl, believed to be in his fifties, has been on Egypt's wanted list since 1994 on charges of involvement in terrorist acts, added the sources. He left Egypt in the 1980s to join the mujahideen (holy warriors) fighting Soviet troops in Afghanistan. Al-Adl, whose real name is Mohammed Ibrahim Mekkawi, has been charged in the United States with involvement in 1998 bombings at US embassies in Africa. According to the US indictment, al-Adl, an ex-officer in the Egyptian army, provided military and intelligence training to members of al-Qaeda in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Sudan.
