CAIRO: The British Ambassador to Egypt James Watt said that the UK needed evidence from Egypt that convicts wanted fugitives of the former regime who live openly n Britain, pointing out that London had not received, over the past 9 months, a response from the Egyptian authorities on evidence and concerning assets of Egyptian figures in London. He added that the British government expressed its readiness to allow Egyptian officials in concern to come to London and discuss the issue of restoring Egyptian money looted abroad by former regime officials with their British counterparts, and that his country “is in constant contact with the Egyptian judicial authorities,” however, “the latter was preoccupied with the elections,” adding that London is ready to fully cooperate. The UK ambassador emphasized that it “stands with the Egyptian people and their rights to recover the looted money, and this, of course, requires an investigation and evidence to the court and the decisions taken in the stages of the litigation would be taken by the British authorities, and this case is currently being heard,” Watt added. As for the extradition of Egyptian former regime figures, Watt said that the British government received requests from the Egyptian authorities to extradite them, “but the government is still investigating and studying these requests and in case of indictment, the British government will respond.” Watt added during his talk at a joint meeting, held by members of parliament's foreign relations committee, headed by FJP MP Essam el-Erian and a delegation of members of the UK's House of Commons that “Britain had handed Egypt over its maps of landmines in al-Alamein area, but the tremendous amount [of mines] was planted by Germany and Italy.” BM ShortURL: http://goo.gl/DyJqh Tags: Extradition, featured, James Watt, London, Officials Section: Egypt, Europe, Latest News
