Woman marries incarcerated rapist serving 18 year sentence in UAE
Published in Bikya Masr on 29 - 02 - 2012

CAIRO: A 32 year-old convicted rapist tied the knot with his fiancee in Al Ain Shariah Court, according Al Khaleej Daily.
The Emirati is currently serving an 18 year jail term on charges of kidnapping and raping an Asian girl by impersonating an official.
Dressed in a prison uniform and in handcuffs, he waited along with two policemen for his bride to arrive in court. When his 29 year-old bride entered the court with her guardian and other witnesses, he promptly handed over a Dh 10,000 dowry and made her his wife.
He was happy to consider himself a married man, however, he wished it could have been under significantly different circumstances.
It had been most difficult for the bride to get her family to agree to the union. “I have faith in him and believe he is innocent,” said the bride, who had been visiting him in prison, said.
She said there are ambiguities in the case as the plaintiff is not in the country. She stressed that her husband is innocent and has denied all charges.
“My family checked the credentials of my husband and were convinced of his good character. He enjoys a good reputation in his neighborhood and at his workplace,” she added.
The case is currently under the consideration of the appellate courts.
The lower court has sentenced him to 18 years in jail: three years on charges of theft and 15 years for kidnapping and raping charges.
