CAIRO: A wounded British journalist has been smuggled out of Syria and into bordering Lebanon, activists in the northern part of Lebanon told German press agency dpa on Tuesday. Paul Conroy arrived at a Beirut hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment for injuries sustained while reporting in Syria. However, a number of online activists and journalists are reporting that the news is false and Conroy has not been smuggled out of Syria. Bikyamasr.com could not verify either report. Conroy was injured in the attack that killed fellow foreign correspondent Marie Colvin and a French journalist in Homs last week. “Conroy was smuggled at midnight into northern Lebanon and taken to the American Hospital of Beirut,” Abu Mohammed, a Syrian activist based in northern Lebanon said. Syria President Bashar al-Assad continues his assault on Homs for the 25th consecutive day, which has seen hundreds of civilians killed. Since March of last year, over 7,200 people have been killed in the uprising against Assad, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
